The 400 series stainless steel is a group of alloys that contain around 11% chromium and 1% manganese, offering increased strength and hardness compared to the 300 series. This series has a higher carbon content, which gives it a martensitic crystalline structure, making it highly resistant to wear.[1] However, due to its composition, 400 series stainless steel is more susceptible to rust and corrosion under certain conditions. While it can be heat-treated to further enhance its hardness, it is generally less corrosion-resistant than austenitic stainless steels, such as those in the 300 series.[2]
